Structure

Elim Christian Kindergarten offers a balance of structured and free-play activities in its programme. The structured times include two circle times per session for the whole group, and small group teaching times.

The second circle time in the morning is Bible Time, where the children are involved in stories and songs with a Christian message.

Our programme is planned from observations of what the teachers have seen the children involved with, or have heard the children talking about.  This is linked in with the learning outcomes from the Early Childhood Curriculum Te Whaariki, as are the individual observations that teachers undertake on one child from their group each week.

Each teacher chooses one child from their group to observe and records a learning situation taking place.  These are then discussed by the teaching team and strategies are put in place help build on these skills, and others as opportunities present themselves.

Learning Stories are put into individual children's portfolios along with photos taken for parents to view and discuss with teachers.

Our afternoons now include a programme called "Ready, Get Set, Go" for afternoon children 4 years and over. This includes learning the day of the week, date - month; year; weather; the letter of the week; number of the week; poem of the week, followed by pre-writing skills focussing on the letter of the week; a story and afternoon tea.

English for Pre-school children is conducted on a Thursday afternoon, after the afternoon session 3:05 - 4:05. Mrs Lyn Gordon is the teacher, supported by Mrs. Young. Mrs Green from the Kindergarten. The lessons are for 10 weeks a term at $10 per lesson. Parents are encouraged to stay.
